Press In: Drawing Closer to God When Life Gets Hard

When life gets overwhelming, our natural instinct is often to pull back, to retreat, to try to handle things on our own. But God invites us to do the opposite: to press in, to draw closer, to lean into His presence even when—especially when—everything feels hard.

Pressing into God isn't about having perfect faith or saying the right prayers. It's about choosing proximity over distance, choosing His presence over our own understanding, choosing to run toward Him instead of away from Him.

What Does It Mean to Press Into God?

To press in means to actively pursue God's presence, to seek Him with intention and desperation. It's the posture of someone who knows they can't make it on their own and refuses to try.

James 4:8 says, "Come near to God and he will come near to you." This is both a promise and an invitation. God doesn't hide from us—He's waiting for us to draw close. And when we do, He meets us there.

Pressing in looks like:

  • Choosing to pray even when you don't feel like it
  • Opening your Bible when your heart is heavy
  • Worshiping in the middle of the storm
  • Crying out to God with honest, raw prayers
  • Sitting in His presence even when you don't have words

Why We Need to Press In During Hard Times

When life is easy, it's tempting to coast spiritually. But when the pressure comes, when the pain hits, when the uncertainty feels unbearable—that's when we discover what we're really anchored to.

Psalm 46:1 reminds us: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." He's not just available when things are good. He's an ever-present help—always there, always ready, always enough.

Pressing into God during hard times:

Anchors us to truth when emotions lie. Our feelings will tell us we're alone, forgotten, or abandoned. God's Word tells us the truth: He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

Gives us strength beyond our own. Isaiah 40:29 says, "He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." When we press in, we tap into a source of strength that doesn't run out.

Shifts our perspective. When we're close to God, we see our circumstances through His eyes. What looked impossible becomes possible. What felt hopeless becomes filled with hope.

Deepens our relationship with Him. Intimacy with God isn't built in the easy seasons—it's forged in the fire. When we press in during hard times, we discover depths of His love and faithfulness we never knew before.

How to Press Into God

1. Start with honesty. God already knows what you're feeling. Don't try to clean up your prayers or hide your doubts. Come to Him as you are. Psalm 62:8 says, "Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge."

2. Prioritize His presence. Make time to be with God—not just to ask for things, but to simply be with Him. Sit in silence. Worship. Read His Word. Let His presence minister to your soul.

3. Worship through the pain. Worship isn't just for when you feel good. It's a weapon in the hard times. When you choose to praise God in the middle of the storm, you're declaring that He's bigger than your circumstances.

4. Surround yourself with truth. Fill your mind with Scripture. Listen to worship music. Read books that point you back to Jesus. Let truth drown out the lies that try to pull you away from God.

5. Stay connected to community. Pressing into God doesn't mean isolating yourself. Stay connected to other believers who can pray for you, encourage you, and remind you of God's faithfulness.

What Happens When We Press In

When we press into God, something shifts. Not always in our circumstances, but always in our hearts.

We find peace that doesn't make sense (Philippians 4:7). We discover strength we didn't know we had (2 Corinthians 12:9). We experience His presence in ways that sustain us through the darkest valleys (Psalm 23:4).

And we realize that what we thought would break us actually brought us closer to the One who holds us together.

A Prayer for Pressing In

Lord, I'm pressing in. I don't have it all figured out, and I don't have the strength to do this on my own. But I know You are near, and I'm choosing to draw close to You. Meet me here. Speak to my heart. Fill me with Your peace, Your strength, and Your presence. Help me to trust You even when I can't see the way forward. I need You, Jesus. In Your name, Amen.

Don't Pull Back—Press In

Whatever you're facing today, don't pull back. Don't try to handle it alone. Don't let the enemy convince you that God is distant or disinterested.

Press in. Draw near. Run to Him.

He's waiting for you, and He will meet you there.
