The Greatest Gift: Reflecting on God's Love This Christmas
Share
Every Christmas, we exchange gifts. We carefully choose presents for the people we love, wrap them beautifully, and watch with joy as they're opened. But in all the gift-giving and receiving, there's one gift that stands above all others—a gift so profound, so life-changing, that it transformed all of human history.
That gift is Jesus Christ.
A Gift We Didn't Deserve
Romans 6:23 tells us, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." We were separated from God by our sin, destined for death and eternal separation. We couldn't earn our way back. We couldn't work hard enough, be good enough, or try hard enough to bridge that gap.
But God, in His incredible love, gave us a gift we could never deserve: His only Son.
John 3:16 says it perfectly: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
This wasn't a gift given out of obligation or tradition. It was a gift given out of pure, sacrificial love.
A Gift Wrapped in Humility
Think about how Jesus came into this world. Not in a palace, but in a stable. Not announced to kings, but to shepherds. Not with fanfare and luxury, but in the humblest of circumstances.
Philippians 2:6-8 describes it beautifully: "[Jesus], being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross."
The King of Kings left heaven's glory to be born in a manger. He wrapped Himself in human flesh so that He could live among us, understand us, and ultimately die for us. That's the kind of love that defies comprehension.
A Gift That Keeps Giving
Most gifts we receive eventually wear out, break, or lose their appeal. But the gift of Jesus never fades. His love never runs out. His grace never expires.
When you accept the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, you receive:
- Forgiveness: "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins" (Ephesians 1:7)
- Peace: "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1)
- Purpose: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works" (Ephesians 2:10)
- Hope: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Peter 1:3)
- Eternal life: "And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son" (1 John 5:11)
This gift doesn't just change your eternity—it changes your today. It gives you strength in weakness, hope in despair, and joy in the midst of trials.
A Gift to Be Received
Here's the beautiful thing about God's gift: it's free. You can't earn it, buy it, or work for it. But you do have to receive it.
Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."
All you have to do is believe. Believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Believe that He died for your sins and rose again. Believe that He offers you forgiveness, new life, and a relationship with God.
If you've never received this gift, today can be the day. Simply pray and tell God that you believe in Jesus, that you need His forgiveness, and that you want to follow Him. It's that simple—and that life-changing.
A Gift to Be Shared
When you've received the greatest gift, you can't help but want to share it. The love of Christ compels us to tell others about the hope we've found in Him.
This Christmas, as you celebrate with family and friends, look for opportunities to share the gift of Jesus. It might be through a conversation, an act of kindness, or simply living out your faith in a way that points others to Him.
The world needs this gift now more than ever. People are searching for hope, peace, and purpose—and all of it is found in Jesus.
Reflecting on the Greatest Gift
This Christmas, take time to reflect on the magnitude of God's gift to you. Don't let the busyness of the season distract you from the wonder of what God has done.
He gave His Son. Jesus gave His life. And through that sacrifice, we've been given everything we could ever need.
That's the greatest gift. That's the reason we celebrate. That's the love that changes everything.
"Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!" — 2 Corinthians 9:15
